[mod_python] mod_python on Windows with Python 2.3b1?

Trying to run mod_python on Apache 2.0.46
on WIn2K using Python 2.3b1, as soon as
I uncomment the LoadModule line for mod_python.so,
Apache won't start up (even though it seems
to get past loading the mod_python module,
but gives no message on why it dies).

I'm not compiling myself, using the straight
binaries downloaded from Apache and Sourceforge.
Any ideas?
