[mod_python] Problems with apxs

I have RedHat 6.2, Apache 1.3.20 and Python2.1.
I have downloaded mod_python-2.7.5.
I have compiled Apache with DSO support and compiled Python without thread
support.
I am unable to compile mod_python as a DSO.
apxs reports an error - rc=255.
I have re-arranged the parameters to apxs but only seem able to get two
responses from it.  It either displays its short help text or reports back
with - rc=255.  Any ideas?  I am at the end of my tether.
