[mod_python] cookies

hello all,  how is one to access the client's cookies from a function
being handled by the publisher handler?
i looked in os.environ, i tried req.add_common_vars() then looked at
req.subprocess_env, and i looked at req.headers_in.
i didn't see any cookie stuff anywhere!?
