1.3. Setting up Mod_Python

Since Mod_Python embeds the interpreter into Apache, do you need to also have Python installed separately on your computer?

Yes you do. mod_python does not include the python interpreter.

I understand that the difference between 2.x and 3.x is apache1 vs apache2, but I'd like to know what else is different besides that. ie, is there anything i can do with 3 that is not possible with 2 (and the other way around)?

It's not included in the Win32 download. You have to download the C sources and extract it from the .tgz

i got installed python 2.5.2 and mod_python-3.3.1.win32-py2.5-Apache2.2; then i got this error: "Python version mismatch, expected '2.5', found '2.5.2'"

is there a way to fix that except for installing python 2.5?

2.2. Can't import! Module _apache not found!

Don't Panic! This is normal!

The _apache module allows mod_python to get access to all the internal bits of apache. It is built in to the mod_python apache code and made available to python when mod_python is initialised.

This means that you can't import mod_python into scripts that are run from the command line or any other context outside a running apache server.

An exception to this is the _psp module. You can import this module, since it is just the interface to the flex-based C parser for psp.

Another reason you may see this if you are trying to execute a mod_python module as a CGI script. The _apache module is loaded by Apache at startup and only scripts which are executing under mod_python will actually be able to import it.

That you get these error messages can actually be useful in solving problems when you aren't quite sure what version of mod_python you have. You can determine which version is being used by executing "python" itself and attempting to import the module "mod_python.psp". For example:

If you see a Python exception of the form:

  ImportError: No module named _apache

it means that you have mod_python version 3.1. If you see the Python exception:

  ImportError: No module named psp

it means that you only have version 2.7. Finally, if you instead see the Python exception:

  ImportError: No module named mod_python.psp

it means that mod_python isn't installed after all, or at least not for the version of Python you are trying to use.

2.3. Where did my stderr debugging info go?

STDERR for mod_python scripts is still directed at the httpd error log, same as for CGI scripts, but the STDERR filehandle is buffered. Because the python interpreter remains alive inside apache after your request has completed (which is, after all, the whole point of mod_python!) the STDERR filehandle never gets flushed so your debugging output doesn't appear. (You can force STDERR to be flushed by restarting apache.)

You need to call sys.stderr.flush() whenever you want to make debugging output appear. The easiest way to do this is create a log object that does the flushing for you:

    class unbuffered:
        def write(self, data):
            sys.stderr.write(data)
            sys.stderr.flush()

    log = unbuffered()
    # ....
    print >> log, "Log message"

(You can also expand this to make the log object add timestamps, script name, or other useful info to each line of output.)

It is worth mentioning that there are actually certain cases in the internal C code of mod_python whereby it calls PyErr_Print(). The output of this function is sent to stderr and as such suffers similar problems to that described above. Thus, sometimes one will not see the low level Python error messages until Apache is shutdown or restarted.

If there are circumstances where Apache is returning 500 errors or other problems are occuring but no Python errors can be found in the log, shutdown or restart Apache and you might then find they appear in the file.

You might also want to use publisher, which allows you run a normal *.py script that returns a value for the server to display. For that, add the following lines to your httpd.conf:

Now, write your Python script to return some data to the server.

Note that if still using mod_python 2.7.X, the original handler should be:

If req.send_http_header() isn't used with mod_python 2.7.X, the content type header will not actually be flushed out with the response header. In mod_python 3.X it is done automatically.

The consequences of not flushing the headers is that if Apache hasn't been set up appropriately to send back a default content type of "text/plain" a browser may not be sure about how to display the response and will fall back to looking at the extension in the URL. In most cases a browser will not know what to do with a ".py" file and will ask you to save the response to a file instead of actually displaying it.

mod_python does its job and outputs the parameters name/tele. Then on apache.OK apache outputs a new set of headers with the "200 OK" as "page title" but generates an error 500 and sometimes 200 in the logfile, and outputs the standard error message for a 500 internal server error.

2.10. mod_python.so is not loadable into the server in a win32 environment

Let's suppose, you have configured your Apache with mod_python properly and you use the binary distributions (e.g. Apache/2.0.47 Win32, Python 2.2 and mod_python-3.0.3.win32.exe), there is a good chance nevertheless, that the apache check will fail:

cmd>apache -t Syntax error on line 174 of %APACHE_HOME%/conf/httpd.conf: Cannot load %APACHE_HOME%/modules/mod_python.so into server: The specified module could not be found.

(As a matter of course the module does exist in the specified path.)

The problem was, that there is a reference to the mscoree.dll (belongs to the dotnet stuff) in the mod_python dso, which could'nt be resolved on my pc. After installing the dotnet-redistributables it works.

2.16. using /foo/index.py and /foo/bar/index.py gives unexpected results

You cannot have modules with the same name in one Python interpreter. Since both of the below directories execute within the same subinterpreter, if you use same names for modules (index.py) as well as any global variables, you will have name clashes and rather unpredictable behaviour.

The solution is to either name things differently, or configure Apache such that /foo and /foo/bar run in different subinterpreters.

2.30. Getting Epydoc to work on mod_python code

If you are trying to get Epydoc (http://epydoc.sourceforge.net) to generate docs for your mod_python code, you will notice that Epydoc raises and error that it can't import _apache.py. Since this is actually part of the mod_python.so Apache module, we need to fake Epydoc out and have it load a pseudo module instead. This is a harmless fix and won't effect Apache or mod_python.

In a safe directory, possibly near ${HOME}, create this file and extend your $PYTHONPATH env var to cover the residing directory.

2.31. Modules won't reload even if changed

How can I make mod_python reload all modules every time? I tried forcing reloading of modules in code with either

but in both cases the modules get cached and i have to restart the server after changing the modules.

3. Programming/Development

3.1. My module imports other modules - how do I reload those?

Mod_python will check the timestamp of the handler script (the one used directly by mod_python) and if the date of the last import was before the last file change it will reload that script.

This check does not apply to modules that your handler imports, so if you made changes to one of those (in)directly loaded modules (regardless of whether you changed the handler script also) you need reload that module somehow in order for them to take effect. The simplest way is to restart the mod_python process that makes these decisions by restarting Apache, but as you probably noticed that gets annoying after a while.

One way to deal with this in your code is to use mod_python's import mechanism to import your own modules from your handler script, so instead of e.g.:

 import mymodule

use

 from mod_python import apache
 mymodule = apache.import_module("mymodule")

import_module will check the timestamp of the module every time and reload it if necessary.

Another way is to create a debug flag in your scripts and do a reload when it is on:

 DEBUG = 1

 import mymodulea
 import mymoduleb

 if DEBUG:
        mymodulea = reload(mymodulea)
        mymoduleb = reload(mymoduleb)

This way they will always reload.

The advantage of the latter method is that there is no performance hit associated with checking the module source timestamp once the DEBUG flag is set to 0.

It should be noted that the code examples above only apply to imports done within a handler function. Making these changes at global scope will make no difference as it is dependent on the code being executed when each new request comes in. Code at global scope is only executed once when the module itself is loaded.

Try leveraging SQLAlchemy's connection pool facilities.

I put something like this in dbpool.py (snippet from http://www.sqlalchemy.org/docs/pooling.myt):

3.6. How do I find where my script is running from? How can I use relative paths in mod_python?

For a CGI, the CWD is set to the script directory, so you can use relative paths to find supporting files such as templates. For mod_python, CWD is set to "/" so you need to use absolute paths. But you can avoid hard-coding paths into your mod_python applications (which makes distribution much harder) using the __file__ built-in variable, something like this:

   template_path = os.path.dirname(__file__)  + '/../templates/'

Then you can distribute a directory hierarchy like

   cgi-bin/script.py
   templates/top.tmpl
   ....

and it will work no matter where Apache is installed in the destination machine.

When constructing an absolute pathname using directory component of __file__, don't simply use '+' and '/''s to construct the path as it will not necessarily be portable. Instead use os.path.join().

  template_path = os.path.join(os.path.dirname(__file__),'..','templates')

Instead of using the directory the script is contained in, ie. dirname of __file__, you could also use dirname of 'req.filename' which is the target of the URL as identified by Apache, or 'req.hlist.directory' which is the directory the Python*Handler directive pertinent to the phase was defined for.

3.7. How can I send status updates while my script is running?

There are lots of ways to do that. In the old CGI world you would use something like an nph-script to send the partial HTML output as it was generated. But you had to be careful of buffering and so forth.

In mod_python, anything sent to the req.write() routine is passed on to the browser with no buffering or delay, so you can use this quite simply to send status updates every so often. Like this:

Other more complex solutions involving redirects and refresh meta-tags are also possible and might work in these cases.

Starting with mod_python 3.1, there is a built-in session management module that may be suitable. See http://www.modpython.org/live/mod_python-3.1.2b/doc-html/pyapi-sess.html for details.

Mod_python (prior to 3.1) doesn't provide any session-management capability itself, but there are lots of packages that work very well with mod_python.

Myghty.session, in particular, provides a drop-in replacement for Python 3.1's mod_python.session.Session. In order to switch from native mod_python 3.1 sessions to Myghty's, all you have to do is edit the import line, and specify a writeable directory as the "data_dir" argument of your Session() call. This small change will ensure that your site can run on both Apache 1.3 and 2.0.

3.10. What template mechanisms work with mod_python? How do I do python code in an HTML page?

There are lots of possible ways to solve this general problem of integrating HTML and Python code. Each will have different strengths and weaknesses so have a look around and see what suits you best.

Among the possibilities suggested on the mailing list:

* PSP (Python Server Pages) (http://www.modpython.org/live/mod_python-3.1.2b/doc-html/pyapi-psp.html ) comes with the latest (3.1.3) version of mod_python and allows embedding of python code within HTML.

* Albatross (http://www.object-craft.com.au/projects/albatross/) is a toolkit for building stateful applications that runs on top of mod_python (or as CGI or a bunch of other possibilities.) It has a Model/View/Controller design, and provides HTML templating, session management and a host of other neat features.

* PWO (http://www.jamwt.com/pwo/) is a simple JSP-style processor that allows you to embed Python code.

* Draco (http://draco.boskant.nl/) also support the M/V/C approach. It's nicely thought out and well documented (although the database component is rather low-level.)

* PythMl (http://adullact.net/projects/pythml) provide a very simple way to embedded python in html, for very compact style

* PSE (http://nick.borko.org/pse) is the Python Servlet Engine which includes compiled XML/HTML templates and separate Python code for application logic in a nice, efficient package.

* Clearsilver (http://www.clearsilver.net) is a language-neutral HTML templating system which can work with mod_python.

Rather than a template including Python code, HTMLgen is a library used by the application code, which builds a tree of Python objects that represent the web page. Evaluating this object tree produces the HTML.

* Myghty (http://www.myghty.org) - Python based content-delivery and template system derived from HTML::Mason. It's quite fast.

3.12. How do I initialize global variables?

If you just want to initialize a global variable, you can probably do that using the "PythonImport" directive. in short:

 ServerName foo.com
 PythonPath "sys.path+['/path/to/MyGlobals']"
 PythonImport MyGlobals foo.com

or something like this, depending on how you set the PythonInterpPerDirective/Directory settings. PythonImport happens per-subinterpreter (not for the main interpreter, nor per-thread), inside of the apache per-child hook. This of course will only be shared within a child process, within a named subinterpreter. There are good docs on how it is used in the mod_python manuals.

Another example:

 # Creates a subinterpreter "MyInterpreter" which handles the
 # requests in this scope to be run there
 PythonInterpreter MyInterpreter
 PythonPath "sys.path+['/path/to/MyGlobals']"
 PythonImport MyGlobals MyInterpreter

There are some caveats, however:

1) The imports happen at child initialization time, when a lot of the configuration hasn't been merged in yet. This includes: PythonInterpreter (!!!), PythonOptions, ....

2) PythonImport is not really subinterpreter-scoped: it is a global directive that specifies the interpreter name. Plus PythonInterpreter isn't in effect at the time of import, either. It would be nice to have a directive like

 PythonInterpInit Foo

which would affect the interpreter "in the current scope" in the apache configuration -- i.e. at the virtual server level by default, or per directive / directory if those options are used.

3) This is not entirely specific to PythonImport, but it is difficult in general to get your hands on configuration variables (PythonOption-s, in particular) not in the context of a request. It would be nice if each subinterpreter had access to the Apache configuration variables (e.g. PythonOptions) scope-local to it.

As a workaround, I'm using named interpreters and moving all sub-interpreter-specific configuration into importable files.

4) Running with PythonAutoReload may still kill global variables if you're not careful.

5) PythonImport is server-scoped, so is not legal inside of Directory or Location directives.

You can get the same affect as (2) above by introducing a dummy handler earlier in the phase to the actual one you want run. For example, if using mod_python.publisher with AddHandler, use:

  AddHandler mod_python .py
  PythonHandler MyGlobals
  PythonHandler mod_python.publisher

In MyGlobals, as well as initialising all the globals, add:

  from mod_python import apache

  def handler(req):
    return apache.OK

Any global data will be initialised as soon as the module is imported the first time. The handler() method is a dummy handler just so mod_python has something to call. As it returns apache.OK, mod_python will still go on to invoke the mod_python.publisher handler.

This concept of a dummy phase handler can also be used to provide simple solutions to some of the other issues as well. That topic is starting to get too complicated for a FAQ entry though.

Importing the psp module doesn't work, because psp imports apache which imports _apache (which you can't do outside mod_python). However, as long as you aren't using any other mod_python modules in the psp code for the page you are converting to html, the above should work. The class is necessary because the psp parser uses the req.write() function with both 2 and 3 arguments in different places, so making req a file won't work. You need to change to the directory where the inputfile is stored, or relative includes using the psp include directive won't work.

You can't with mod_python.publisher as it only allows GET and POST. Ie., it runs with code:

Is there a way, apart from caching the write function calls, to send http headers manually. I do not want the write function to automatically traverse through the headers_out data object, and produce the headers. I want to send the headers out, via the write command. I want to write Apache auth phase handler for authentication via external common login site.

The mod_python documentation say, that I can return apache.OK, apache.HTTP UNAUTHORIZED or apache.HTTP FORBIDDEN result. Unfortunelly i want to return "MOVED" status (redirect) to my login page. Offcourse i can do it, but them Apache continue request process and execute the main content handler. Is it a feature or bug ? Which status codes should break request chain process and which not ?
